Grant and Lee Essay Instructions, follow them very carefully and use the hand outs attached for formatting: The Civil War (1861-1865) fought between the Confederates and the United States of America caused the deaths of more Americans than all other wars combined. The Army of Northern Virginia (Confederacy) had lost the ability to engage in offensive operations by the Spring of 1864, but would fight a stubborn defensive war against the Army of the Potomac (Union) for more than a year. Finally, with his army on the verge of starvation and cornered by superior forces near Appomattox Courthouse in April 1865, General Robert E. Lee agreed to meet with General Ulysses S. Grant to discuss surrender terms. General Grant wrote his memoirs of these campaigns in his, The Personal Memoirs of Ulysses S. Grant, a sparse, factual description of battles, terrain, and maneuvers between battles from his point of view as the field commander of Union forces. General Lee did not write memoirs or explain his actions. Several documentaries present Lee’s leadership from the Confederate point of view. Prompt: Write an essay comparing the experience and motivations of the two generals leading up to the surrender at Appomattox Courthouse. Explain how Lee’s fanaticism and Grant’s generosity affected them, their armies and their respective civilian populations. Include details about the surrender; included in the memoirs and presented in the documentary, help to explain how history would remember the two men and how people in North and South would remember the 4-year struggle. Your thesis must be clear, concise and must set the body paragraphs in a way where you list reasoning, and have good transitions between body paragraphs. Your essay must be at least five (8) paragraphs and include footnotes and bibliography (work cited) to receive a passing grade (5 pages) Double spaced, MLA formatting. Justify your opinions with facts from the memoirs and the documentary. Footnote where you use material from the two required sources and at least 2 other outside sources you use. The essay is due Thursday, June 30th at midnight. Essays submitted after will be penalized 10 points per day late.
