Dr. Diane Torres-Velásquez discusses cultural differences among English learners. She offers suggestions on how to make math culturally relevant to students. She addresses the following aspects: vocabulary, building a community of learners, high expectations, rewards, and pride. Choose a content area other than math, such as language arts or science, and complete the following chart in complete sentences in order to best teach your 4-year-old preschool students.

Activity / Strategy to make Language Art culturally relevant to students.

Aspect Activity / Strategy

Vocabulary – Teachers play a key role in children’s language art development. Chosen read-aloud books that can help children identify common themes and have a connection with cultural experiences, which can help with the understanding of unfamiliar words. It is important to select words from the story that can be comprehended and used independently in everyday interactions with others in the classroom. Repeat and introduce new words, within books or through lesson activities to develop the child’s learning and understanding of words.

Building a Community of Learners – Creating a community of learners by establishing rules together and discussing to come to an agreement on classroom rules and expectations.

High Expectations – As an educator, I will express interest in the ethnic background of each student by maintaining a strict level of sensitivity to language concerns. Maintaining high expectations, those expectations must be individually set to be appropriately challenging, yet remain accomplishable for each student (Wardle, 2013). All students should be engaged in the same learning process in a clear and consistent way.

Rewards – Teachers need to awarded all children through praises and acknowledged for a job well done. Make sure to praise their hard work and effort, not just their success. Learning new words and using the words on a daily basis to interact with others in the classroom, the child will be rewarded with books to read.

Pride – Having pride in accomplishment, every child should feel the achievement of something great such as reading books to the class. All children can naturally become engaged in their work, and with motivating force comes with pride and accomplishments.

Method of sharing this information with families – Language art plays an essential role in preparing young children to be successful in school. It’s important to encourage parents to talk and read to their children in their home language as a way of strengthing children ’s language skills.
